Personal Testimonies

I have been sober for 15 months with the support of Steps 4 Life Community Services program. I went into a residential treatment program for 45 days. Before I went into the program, I was living on the streets. Specifically, under the freeway overpass. I had absolutely no money, no resources, no job, and nowhere to when I got out. I was extremely fearful that I was going to relapse. Out of desperation, I got a list of transitional housing programs that someone had told me about. I had also been searching for a job during this time. I then found a transitional supportive house in my hometown of Redlands. Steps 4 Life was on the list and I made the call. I can still remember calling from a park because it was quieter than the house I lived at, which was always crazy and chaotic. I wanted to be able to hear the other person on the line. I talked to Ms. Cindy, and she arranged to meet with me. During our conversation she told me the rules and the support that I would be provided, and then I moved in. I still did not have a job. I thought I would end up homeless again and possibly relapse. I continued to do what the program required of me. I also continued to go to meetings, calling other twelve step members for support, and found a sponsor. Today I continue my success I finished school and am working full time.

I came to Steps 4 Life Community Services with only $20.00 in my pocket, my clothes and my truck! Within three days Steps 4 Life staff provided me with support groups, resources of where I could apply for a job, helped me apply for county assistance and free medical assist to assist me with my medical needs. Staff guided me in updating my resume. I was able to volunteer my time to brush up my skills and to keep focus on the bigger picture. Without the unconditional love and support from staff at S4LCS my mind could not stay focused, I learned at S4LCS that I had to keep myself connected with others who also suffered and struggled with homelessness and addiction. Today I have arrived at self-sufficiency and I have managed to put together 5 years clean and am working on my substance abuse counsellor degree.  I’ve learned the meaning of humility and humbleness and it has taught me how to work hard and the meaning of change and diligence and to appreciate everything and everyone that is part of my life today. Today I’m grateful, employed and loyal to the people in my life. It has allowed me to become a product citizen of my community. I am now working in the field of addiction helping people exactly like me.
